SlideShare is great, but I have had the same trouble that Dr. V talks about in her Neverending Search post--the text gets all run together, and sometimes the presentations don't work all that well. I am going to try AuthorStream for these reasons, and also because I want to see how the embed works. That is something else I have had trouble with in SlideShare, it hasn't worked well for embedding into blogs. I have embedded a test here:
As far as the question, I think students need to know about sharing presentations, as there are so many great ones out there to look at. I have read many of them when I am trying to learn something new, or when I have missed a presentation at conference, and it is great to be able to be able to see them online. There is one caveat, though. Just like any other information source, the user needs to check the author. There are tons of presentations be experts in the field, but there are also quite a number of student prepared slide shows that are less than stellar. It is a great way to share information and projects, and it would be a good idea for students to be familiar with these sharing sites both to share their own work and view the work of others.
