Good Times

This past Saturday, I was privileged to join a panel at UNT for the Hazel Harvey Peace Spring Event. Honestly, I don't know how I was selected for the panel, as I am not notable, neither am I highly esteemed. However, it was a great time, and I was able to spend some time with interesting people like Dr. Robert Martin, Marilyn Joyce, Teresa Crafton, and Annie Downey. The best part of it was that even though we had not really communicated ahead of time, we all brought a different, and yet edifying view to the table. Here is the main handout, and another one. The panel were discussing college and career readiness. Dr. Martin started us off with a very insightful speech about how we must work together as a community, and not stay in our separate spheres. If students are to be prepared, it will take a group effort. This is a very watered down version of what he said, but you get the idea. Being prepared for life after high school is something we as librarians, no matter what level, have to think about. If we do our jobs as we should, and team up with teachers to teach the 21st Century skills, we will be far down the road to helping our students succeed in the future. Another possible sources for some skill teaching ideas comes from Tony Wagner's book, The Global Achievment Gap. Check it out!
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about the survey, I just haven't closed it yet. I will share results as soon as I can.
