Book History from A to Z: Q is for Quarto


A quarto was made by folding the paper or vellum twice into four leaves or eight pages.  It would have been roughly half the size of a folio.   
In this photo, the largest volume is a folio (folded once--if you recall an earlier post about that).  The second largest is a quarto.
