And now for the student survey results. Alas, the sample here was much smaller, only 9 students out of an enrollment of over 2000 answered the survey. I put it up for two weeks during heavy research time, I was hoping they would see it on the web page header. Oh, well..I will try something different next year.
Good news:
None of the respondents said that the library staff was unhelpful, and only one respondent said that the library was unhelpful, so that means we are hopefully helping students! The library website was also overwhelmingly rated as helpful, again with only one dissenter. Comments on these questions reflected this idea as well. As far as what services students have used, the most frequent answer was "helped me find information online," followed by "helped me with MLS format," and "helped me find print information." These are good results as far as I am concerned. Interestingly, the three most helpful parts of the website were "Research Help," "MLA Help," and "teacher Blogs and Wikis." I only added the teacher blogs and wikis this year, in response to a perceived need. In other words, students kept coming into the library with panic-stricken looks on their faces saying they had to post on Mrs. So-and-So's website, only they didn't know how to get to it. I asked the faculty and the tech facilitator to let me know their web addresses, and compiled them on a link page for student to have an easy way to get to teacher blogs and wikis. Interesting that this has been one of the most popular items on the website. As far as the comments, they were very warming to this old librarian's heart. Mostly they were about being able to get a lot done in the libary, one student even mentioned the word databases--that brought a tear to my eye, and their was only one negative comment, related to not being able to use the library during "free periods." Students are supposed to leave campus if they have a release period, so I cannot control that, and what students don't realize is that we are not a public library, our mission is different. Overall, though, very encouraging. My goal for next year will be to forge ahead and to try and get more students to answer the survey.
